The Department of Justice (DOJ) has issued subpoenas to actress Gretchen Barretto and her longtime partner, businessman Atong Ang, in connection with the case of missing cockfighting enthusiasts or sabungeros.
National Prosecution Service (NPS) spokesperson Mico Clavano confirmed on Tuesday that the subpoenas were successfully served.
“Their subpoenas have been issued from the preliminary report given by the NPS as against the 59 or 60 respondents in the case of the missing sabungeros. Because there are a lot of them and we usually serve that personally, the service is still ongoing,” Clavano said.
When asked recently if there is sufficient evidence against Barretto and Ang, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla replied: “There may be enough. In fact, sometimes you can suffer from indigestion on the information that comes out or that came out from the statements given and even parts of the documents that were submitted to us. So we just have to thoroughly weigh everything. There’s a lot more police work involved than anything else.”
It can be recalled that on June 19, 2025, reports surfaced that 34 missing sabungeros were allegedly buried in Taal Lake.
